Tomorrow is the first day of June, which means Father’s Day is just around the corner, on Sunday June 16.
|
This year's Father's Day is a particularly special one for my family as we prepare to celebrate some good news: our two youngest sons will soon be fathers, one for the first time and the other for a second. We are filled with such happiness at the thought of having two more grandchildren. They're both due to arrive just weeks apart, late in the fall.
We are incredibly proud of our sons who are already dads. It’s been a joy to watch them navigate the excitement and demands of fatherhood. Child-rearing has changed so much since I was young!
As I think about them… I also think of my Dad who would have been so proud of them, too. Dad passed when I was 18 and while that was quite a long time ago, I think of him often. I’m grateful for the short time we had together and the positive impacts he made on my life. He taught me how to always welcome people into our home, always be there for people in need, the importance of loyalty and—most of all—family.

In addition to Dad, there have been many other father figures too. I’m fortunate to be able to think back on the many mentors I’ve had over the years who helped me along the way. I hope you can too! It's important to honour and remember the special people in our lives.
We'll be celebrating at our house with a special meal, as always. I’m hoping the men in my life can come to a consensus on the menu, but I have a hunch it will include steak... always a great special-occasion meal.

For dads who like to entertain, we’ve just received a sleek and beautiful stainless-handled slate entertaining board from Taylor’s Eye Witness. It's almost 2 feet long and includes a nice variety of cheese knives with beautiful peardrop-shaped natural acacia wood handles.
This handsome piece would work equally well for serving sushi in addition to all kinds of charcuterie, and is attractively priced at $79.99.

This year we started to carry a beautiful line of Polish-made glassware and barware from Krosno. Minimalistic, understated, and simply elegant.
We asked our downtown neighbour Jake from Hunter & Company to develop a special cocktail using a Krosno cider glass and featuring our fabulous smoked Origen Spanish Gordal olives. Jake's recipe for a "new" Old Fashioned looks as great as it tastes.

Lastly, we are loving Wüsthof’s new 7-inch Craftsman hybrid knife. Chef Ran has been giving it a rigorous workout, and says she is enjoying both its length and multifunctional nature: it can be used as a chef’s knife (for regular chopping, slicing, and mincing), while its unique shape and lip-point tip also allow you to debone like a boning knife, or filet and carve like a carving knife.
