HELLO FROM JILL

Welcome to September! This is always a full and busy month, filled with excitement as many head back to school and the fall harvest begins.

While there are many things we love about September’s bounty, this particular newsletter is devoted to our passion for tomatoes... of all kinds. Tomatoes are top of mind right now because the outdoor farmers' market across King Street at Covent Garden Market is teeming with spectacular tomatoes of every shape and colour.

In addition to beautiful fresh tomatoes, there are many delicious types of canned and preserved options as well. When I started my store almost 25 years ago, I built a pyramid of canned San Marzano tomatoes along one wall. I wanted to introduce customers to these exceptional tomatoes (and I admittedly needed to fill a large part of the store, since I had not fully purchased all my inventory).
Since that day we have made it a mission at Jill’s Table to source all manner of tomato products, including premium canned plum tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, sun-dried, semi-dried and countless wonderful tomato sauces and even tomato jam. To add to the variety, we’ve recently introduced two new tomato sauces from Sacla. We can’t wait for you to try them and let us know what you think.

What you can create with fresh tomatoes and our tomato products is truly limitless. This time of year, I always crave a simple toasted tomato sandwich. For the perfect version, check out some of my tips below.

Tomatoes are as lovely to look at as they are to eat (at least we think so) and that’s why we regularly seek out housewares products with images of tomatoes on them. Emma Bridgewater immediately comes to mind, as does the beautiful Staub tomato cocotte.
The love for tomatoes doesn’t end there. We’ve even devoted a cooking class to this great ingredient. We are excited to begin our fall series of cooking classes this month and we have a handful of spaces left in our tomato class, a session on seafood, and a few others we’re really looking forward to. Check them out at jillsclasses.ca.

Beyond our kitchen classroom, many people will be heading back to class at our local colleges and university. How exciting! For some, that might mean setting up an apartment. New neighbours at the Aqui apartment complex just a few doors down from Jill's Table might be doing the same. We’d love to help! If you are in need of housewares and cookware, we carry multiple world-class brands.
For example, we are proud to carry Canadian-made Meyer SuperSteel cookware from PEI, and we're thrilled to be offering huge savings of up to 61% off. Meyer's excellent 10-piece SuperSteel set is on sale for $349.99 (reg. $899.99, a $550 savings). Also be sure to check out our All-Clad specials, and our latest edition of Hestan cookware as well. Welcome to the neighbourhood!

Our newsletter would not be complete without some recipes and—you guessed it—they are going to feature tomatoes.
First we’re sharing a delicious and simple recipe for panzanella. This rustic Tuscan bread salad is one of our favourites. In addition to bread and wonderful local tomatoes, we make this salad with Ponti organic red wine vinegar and award-winning Frantoi Cutrera DOP olive oil from Sicily. We’re pleased to be able to continue carrying this oil at a great price of $14.99. Grab some basil from your garden and you will be amazed at how wonderful this salad is.

Our second recipe features our canned Favuzzi tomatoes in a simple curried tomato and chickpea soup. Arvinda’s curry powder makes this soup so flavourful. It’s quick and easy, and ideal for busy weeknights and sweater weather.

Here’s to the humble tomato, fall’s bounty, and the new beginnings September brings!

As always, we look forward to seeing you in the store.

— Jill

  • Choose butter, Kewpie mayo, or Stonewall kitchen garlic aioli to slather on the toasted bread.
  • Slice tomatoes and give them a gentle sprinkle of Maldon sea salt flakes.
  • Place on one piece of the toasted bread. Top with cooked bacon, quality ham, or Italian prosciutto.
  • Give a generous grind of pepper, and top with organic arugula or greens. Place remaining piece of toasted bread on top and enjoy!
