Happy Canada Day!

Canada Day is fast approaching and this year it feels particularly special.

Challenging political and economic controversies have rallied us together in inspiring ways, helping us bond as we continue to discover what it means to be Canadian. The collective and overwhelming sense of pride is heartwarming. There’s a renewed, patriotic enthusiasm to purchase domestic products and to support local Canadian-owned businesses. We thank you for that.

This year, we will celebrate Canada Day with gusto—and want to help make your celebrations unforgettable with festive food, inspired meal ideas, and thoughtful touches that turn any gathering into a true celebration of Canada.

Let’s start with the most important thing: food!
We’ve added to our already significant lineup of Canadian products with some exciting new arrivals. These include 4 varieties of raw, organic Chandler Honey from Scandia, Alberta; an Adirondacks-inspired BBQ sauce from 46 Peaks; and Burlington's Diablo Spiced Nuts' small-batch pecan and cashew blends in Spanish Sabrosa and Maple Pepper Praline flavours. Yum!
As I’m sure you know, Canada produces some truly exceptional cheeses. What better time to showcase some of our favourites and top sellers? You can regularly find the awesome Le Pizy from Quebec in our fridges. (We affectionately call this one “the stinker”!)
From the the monks at the Benedictine Abbey of Saint-Benoît-du-Lac, Quebec, we have the famous (and uniquely Canadian) Bleu Bénédictin blue cheese with its magnificent texture and a rich, woodsy flavor. And as a bonus, despite being a cow's milk cheese it's also naturally lactose-free.

We also carry wonderful cheeses from award-winning cheesemakers Mountainoak from nearby New Hamburg, as well as Gunn’s Hill Artisan Cheese of Woodstock.
We’ll be featuring many of these cheeses on our weekly Sample Saturday, and with the purchase of $20 worth of Canadian cheese, you'll receive a complimentary box of Lesley Stowe Raincoast Crisps (an $8.99 value, in-store only) throughout the month of July. Drop in, give them a try, and treat yourself to some truly excellent Canadian cheese.

Some holidays are all about cooking up family feasts, but not this one. Canada Day is best kept simple, enjoying time with friends and family. So what are we suggesting to make and enjoy on Canada Day?
How about a deceptively simple but absolutely delicious grilled cheese. The secret is quality ingredients: use Cow’s Creamery cheddar (made from 100% PEI dairy) then dip it into "Better Than Ketchup" from Montreal's Joe Beef to elevate this simple, humble sandwich into something sublime. Grilled cheese is hardly a uniquely Canadian dish, of course, but certainly a Canadian staple.
Butter tarts, on the other hand, are the epitome of “Canadian”. We’ve kicked them up a notch this year by making them with La Fabrick’s Whiskey Maple Syrup and added some walnuts to boot. Top this delectable tart with your favourite vanilla ice cream and you have the perfect Canadian summer dessert. Click here for the recipe.

If you’d like to see more Canadian products we’re proud to carry, check out the Canadiana tile on our e-store. Shop online for delivery or to order ahead for easy pick-up, or as always just pop into the store for an always-interesting and unhurried browsing experience.

Canada is home to some truly outstanding products and this Canada Day, we invite you to celebrate and savour the very best of what’s made right here.

As always, we look forward to your visit.
