When I was growing up, there was a saying that an apple a day keeps the doctor away. Not sure if that’s true, but the saying is said to have originated in Wales. There are many other apple idioms: "apple of my eye”, "don’t upset the apple cart", “how do you like them apples?", and so on. Apples seem to be popular! ;)

At one of the trade shows we attended last year, we fell head over heels with Danica’s new apple motif called Apple Orchard. Its vintage look really hit home for us, sparking all kind of talks about our various favourite ways to enjoy apples, and how best to celebrate them.

Recipes
We're heading into peak apple season, so this is the perfect time to share some of our favourite apple recipes with you. Desserts come to mind first, of course, including our much-loved Maple Walnut Apple Cake. My late sister-in-law’s Bavarian Apple Tart recipe is a particular family favourite, too. Then on the savoury side, we've developed a recipe that marries local sausage, cabbage and apples with ingredients from Covent Garden Market in a delicious and satisfying braised dish. These are all fantastic recipes to help usher in the wonderful flavours of early autumn.

Back to Basics
September is back-to-school for many, and at Jill’s Table we are back to a busy season of cooking classes. Cooler weather also means people spend more time in kitchens in general, making comforting family meals.
We always see an uptick in younger customers in September — some setting up apartments from scratch, others just needing a few key kitchen tools & housewares.

...and speaking of being gentle on your knives, there’s hardly a day that goes by that we don’t get several calls asking about titanium cutting boards. In discussing this issue with our key knife suppliers, we've learned that under no circumstances should you be using a metal cutting board. There is a lot of misinformation circulating on the internet, so we are pleased that our customers call us for advice.

For quick and satisfying mid-week dinners, there's no beating pasta. We love Rummo at Jill's Table, and it's worth reminding that Rummo's gluten free pasta is second to none.

This Bavarian Apple Tart recipe was given to me by my sister-in-law Vicki many years ago. You can also make it with blueberries. If you have a food processor, this recipe is very quick to prepare.
