WINTER COMFORTS

The holidays are over and we have a new year to look forward to.
Personally, I welcome winter and its slower pace because it allows me more time to spend in my kitchen. I can’t wait to get home on a cold weekday evening and put something on the stovetop like a quick curry, a stir fry, or a simple pasta dish.
Sundays are a treasure. I might make a slow cooked meal in the oven, and chicken stock on the stovetop for soup. I then sit down with a book and enjoy the aromas as they waft through the house. Then the best part is when family arrives for Sunday dinner.
This is what winter comfort means to me. The importance of cooking and sharing meals are echoed by so many great cookbook authors this year. Bonnie Stern and her daughter Anna Rupert launched Don’t Worry, Just Cook this past fall. Their aim is to “foster comfort and connection through food”.
Sisters Mandy and Rebecca Wolfe have published More Mandy's: More Recipes We Love (on the heels of their very successful Mandy's Gourmet Salads book that features many of the recipes for their signature salads featured at their restaurants). We have fond memories of our team's trip to their Toronto restaurant location. Recipes in this new compilation have a more diverse and international flair.
Award-winning cookbook author Melissa Clarke has a wonderful new book called Dinner in One featuring over 100 recipes that you can make in one vessel, whether it’s a sheet pan or a pot. What’s not to love about that?
What all these authors have in common is an unbridled passion for food and how it brings people together. I encourage you to take advantage of the winter season to savour a good cookbook or two and get into your kitchen and cook... and share whatever comes from it with your family, friends and neighbours. Many thanks to Bonnie and Anna, and Mandy and Rebecca, for sharing their recipes below. To best prepare winter meals like soups, stews, and chowders my go-to vessels are Staub enameled cast iron products from France. We have some exceptional savings this on Staub this month, with some pieces up to 58% off. Check out our Staub collection here.
Here’s to a great 2023.
