HOME FOR THE SUMMER

Jill's Table "Canadiana Eh" gift basket - $95 link

HELLO FROM JILL

I'm so grateful to have had the opportunity to return to my culinary tours again this spring, travelling to Portugal and Ireland.

It's fascinating to learn more about these wonderful countries, exploring magnificent countrysides, trying new dishes and cooking using the myriad of local ingredients. When I travel I’m always amazed how each country in Europe has such a distinct cuisine, when geographically they are not that far apart.

I always return home with such a feeling of gratitude for being able to experience food, history and the company of wonderful people. I’m also so very appreciative of just how broad our food interests are at home. My weekly dinners at home might entail Italian one night, Mexican another and a Southeast Asian meal to finish the week. We are so lucky to have easy access to foods from all over the world thanks to all the people who have made Canada home.

Now that I’m nestled back home, I plan to take the time to enjoy family and friends over casual meals. Yes, it’s time to relax and enjoy summer.

With that in mind… let me share some easy recipes we’ve prepared to help you enjoy your summer.
Pasta salads are a true mainstay of summer potlucks and backyard barbecues. We’ve combined Rummo pasta with Westcoast Select candied salmon for a delicious summer salad. The dressing packs a sweet heat from Proper Heathen Spicy Maple Syrup. If salmon is not to your liking, consider substituting a can of our favourite Callipo tuna.
A delicious Italian summer sandwich can really hit the spot on a warm evening. We recently packed a delicious baguette with some of our favourite products including Stonewall Kitchen garlic aioli, prosciutto, Julius roasted red peppers, artichokes and cheese for a super delicious casual meal or picnic.

And speaking of cheese, did you know we carry fabulous fresh cheeses from Italy that arrive every Friday? We have burrata and mozzarella di bufala.

We continue to be big fans of Mandy’s new cookbook. The publisher kindly shared the recipe for Togarashi Steak Salad and you'll find it published below. We’re delighted we can showcase Peppertree Spice togarashi in this recipe.
Many of you will be spending time at a cottage in the coming weeks, so it’s a great time to share with you that we have introduced Canadian-made Weekend at the Cottage products to our shelves. Founder Nik Manojlovich will be at Jill’s Table this Saturday, July 22nd from 11 to 2, offering delicious samples. I hope you will join us!
A BBQ or potluck isn’t complete without a refreshing summer drink. Gin and tonics are just the ticket. I recently enjoyed an interesting take on this summer favourite in Portugal; it included a sprig of fresh cilantro and a slice of cucumber. You can choose gin in this drink, or if you want a no-alcohol version consider our best-selling Sobrii 0-gin produced in Stratford.

And while I will look forward to all the many great travels ahead of me... for now, there really is no place like home. I hope you take the time to relax and enjoy your home, backyard, or cottage this summer.

Happy summer.

— Jill
